NZTA states it takes most beginner licence holders, approximately 45 hours of professional lessons to learn how to drive, in addition 22 hours of practising to gain confidence with controlling a vehicle and driving co-ordination. This would differ between individuals that have more skills at being comfortable at driving.

In a vehicle with an automatic transmission, one can learn basic driving within a day. However, in a car with a manual transmission, it could take at least two days to learn basic driving.

We recommend that beginner drivers learn in a Automatic transmission to refine their skills before controlling a Manual transmission if they desire to.

Automatic - Car Transmission

The more preferred option for newbie drivers - needing to gain more confidence in controlling a vehicle before refining their skills in driving.

** When sitting a restricted test - If in a AUTO transmission - Drivers are legally only allowed to drive an AUTO car until gaining their FULL LICENCE, only then are they allowed to drive a MANUAL transmission.

Manual - Car Transmission

Individuals that will require or want to gain driving skills with a MANUAL transmission - In most cases for work driving or overseas travel in some EU countries. i.e Tradies / Farming

Ideal option for individuals that are more confident in their car control and driving skills.
