NZTA states it takes most beginner license holders, approximately 45 hours of professional lessons to learn how to drive, in addition 22 hours of practising to gain confidence with controlling a vehicle and driving co-ordination. This would differ between individuals that have more skills at being comfortable at driving.

In a vehicle with an automatic transmission, one can learn basic driving within a day. However, in a car with a manual transmission, it could take at least two days to learn basic driving.

We recommend that beginner drivers learn in a Automatic transmission to refine their skills before controlling a Manual transmission if they desire to.
